JUDGE MATTHEW J. HANSEN
Judge Matthew Hansen was appointed to the Second District Court in May 2025 by Governor Spencer Cox. He serves Morgan, Weber and Davis counties. Prior to his appointment, Judge Hansen served as a Division Chief in the Davis County Attorney’s Office. As a prosecutor, he specialized in cases involving child physical and sexual abuse, adult sexual assault, domestic violence, and homicide. He previously worked for the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office and the Weber County Attorney’s Office. In 2023, Judge Hansen received the State Prosecutor of the Year award from the Utah Crime Victim’s Council. In 2019, Judge Hansen received the Attorney of the Year award from the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office. He received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University. In addition, from the University of Utah, he received a law degree from the S.J. Quinney College of Law and a degree in Master of Business Administration from the David Eccles School of Business. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Hansen served on several Utah Supreme Court Advisory Committees dealing with Ethics and Discipline, the Rules of Evidence, and the Rules of Criminal Procedure. In addition, he served as an Administrative Law Judge for West Valley City, St. George City, and Heber City. In 2022, he was elected as a Commissioner for the Utah State Bar and, in 2024, he was selected by the Governor to be a member of the Utah Victim Services Commission. 7/2025
