Requesting Audio of a Court Proceeding

Page Menu

Utah's district, juvenile and appellate courts keep a special record of what happens in court hearings. We call them "courts of record." These hearings are recorded by either a person called a court reporter or with electronic equipment. This webpage shows you how to get a copy of an electronically recorded hearing if you want to listen to the audio but do not need a transcript. To make the request, you must submit the official request to the District or Juvenile Court in which the hearing took place. There are different forms to make the request to District and Juvenile Courts.

Looking for a different type of court record?

This page is for requests for audio recordings of court hearings. If you are looking for other types of court records, please see our page on Requesting Court Records.

If you need a written transcript of a hearing, not an audio copy, please see our page on Requesting Official Transcripts.

How are hearings recorded?

The format in which a hearing is recorded depends on the recording equipment in the courtroom. To learn about the different formats, see our page on Verbatim Copies of Court Hearings.

How to request an audio recording of a hearing

To request an audio recording of a hearing, follow these steps.

Here are a few ways to figure out the location of the court:

  • Check Your court documents: Look at any papers you received, such as a summons, notice of hearing, or other legal filings. The court's name and address are always listed at the top of these documents.

  • Look up the case online:

    • If you are not a party to a case, you can use the Xchange public case search tool to find case information like where the hearing took place.

    • If you are a party to a case, you can use MyCourtCase to see your case information for free. To get started, you'll need to create an account by providing a valid email address, your case number, and a government-issued ID. Once you've submitted this information, the system will verify your identity and send you instructions on how to access your account.
