Creating PDF Files for Court

1 What is a PDF?

A PDF is a type of file that looks the same on all computers. The court requires this format so they can easily read your papers. This page can help you create PDF of your court papers so you can email them for filing.

How did you create your papers?

1 If you used a fillable court form:

  1. Follow the instructions online - the system will help you download a PDF at the end.
  2. Remember where you saved it! Write down the location or save to your Desktop for easy finding.

In Microsoft Word:

  1. Click on "File" at the top left.
  2. Click "Save As."
  3. Choose "PDF" from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click "Save."
  5. Remember where you saved it! Write down the location or save to your Desktop for easy finding.

In Google Docs:

  1. Click on "File" at the top left.
  2. Click "Download."
  3. Click "PDF Document."
  4. The PDF will save to your computer.

On a Mac:

  1. Click on "File" at the top left.
  2. Click "Print."
  3. At the bottom left, click "PDF."
  4. Click "Save as PDF."
  5. Choose where to save it.
  6. Click "Save."

Using your phone

iPhone/iPad:
  • Open the Notes app
  • Create a new note or open an existing one
  • Tap the camera icon and select "Scan Documents"
  • Take pictures of all pages
  • Tap "Save" when finished
  • Tap the scanned document, then the share icon to save or send as PDF
  • Remember where you saved it or which app has your scan!
Android phone: 
  1. Put your paper on a flat surface with good lighting
  2. Take a clear picture of each page
  3. Make sure all text is readable
  4. Email the pictures to yourself
  5. Us this service to convert your picture into a PDF
  6. Upload your pictures
  7. Click "Convert"
  8. Download your PDF
  9. Remember where you saved it!

Using a scanner:

  1. Place your paper in the scanner
  2. Choose "Scan to PDF" if available
  3. If not, scan as an image, then use the website above to convert to PDF

At a public library:

  1. Ask the librarian for help using their scanner
  2. Most libraries can help you scan documents to PDF
  3. Some libraries offer free scanning services

If you do not have access to a computer:

  1. Visit your local library - Most libraries have computers you can use for free.
  2. Visit an office store like FedEx Office, UPS Store, or Office Depot - They can scan and create PDFs for a small fee.

Check Your PDF Before Sending

  • Open your PDF to make sure:
    • All pages are included.
    • The text is clear and readable.
    • The pages are right-side up.
    • Everything is in black and white.
    • All of your answers are in English.
