Stephen Dent was appointed to the Utah Supreme Court in June 2026 by Governor Spencer J. Cox. Prior to his appointment, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney and as Deputy Criminal Chief and Southern Utah Branch Chief in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah. He previously practiced at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He began his legal career as a judicial law clerk at the United States District Court for the District of Utah and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Justice Dent graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He graduated from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, where he received the Dean’s Award and served as editor-in-chief of the Utah Law Review. 6/26
