Principles of the Work Program
The Work Program provides youth an opportunity to complete court-ordered community services hours and restitution (money owed to victims due to injury or loss). The youth do not receive money, but are given credit for hours worked. Money from the victim restitution is paid directly to the youths' victims. The victim restitution fund receives money through a percentage of fines collected through the Juvenile Court.
The Work Program in Salt Lake County maintains contracts with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and Utah State Fairpark. These agencies provide work opportunities for the youth such as litter removal and cleanup. The youth crews also perform a variety of other community service hours to several different nonprofit organizations.
The Work Program is a successful example of community partnerships. The agencies and the community as a whole benefit from the projects performed by the youth crews. In turn, the community is providing the youth an opportunity to be held accountable for the harm they have done toward their community and their victims.
