JUDGE JOEL A. FERRE

Judge Joel A. Ferre was appointed to the Third District Court in January 2026 by Governor Spencer Cox. He serves Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele counties. Prior to his judicial appointment, Judge Ferre served as the Civil Division Chief in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah, where he had worked as an Assistant United States Attorney since 2018. During his federal career, he also held roles as the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Section Chief and Civil Opioid Coordinator, leading civil enforcement efforts in complex litigation, fraud, and drug diversion cases. Before joining the Department of Justice, Judge Ferre spent nearly two decades as an Assistant Attorney General with the Office of the Utah Attorney General. There, he defended the state in tort, employment, constitutional, and commercial litigation, and served in leadership as the Torts Section Director and Deputy Director of the Litigation Division. Judge Ferre graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Weber State University in 1993. He earned his Juris Doctor from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah in 1996. He has served on the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Model Utah Jury Instructions (Civil), the Utah State Bar Character & Fitness Committee, and the District of Utah Advisory Committee on the Local Rules of Practice.       8/26
