Rules Governing the Utah State Bar – Effective May 1, 2021

Changes allow domestic relations commissioners, retired and senior judges to serve on fee dispute panels. Changes also increase the jurisdictional amount from $3,000 to $10,000 for one lawyer to arbitrate a fee dispute. Other changes are proposed to include licensed paralegal practitioners in the fee dispute rules.

Rules Governing the State Bar – Effective May 1, 2019

USB14-0804. Certification for military legal assistance lawyers. Amend. Updates the standards for military lawyers who are allowed by military and federal law to assist certain persons who can receive military legal assistance.

USB14-0805. Admission for spouse of active military stationed in Utah. New. Allows spouses of servicemen and women who are stationed in Utah to serve as practicing lawyers under certain conditions.

Rules Governing the Utah State Bar – Effective November 1, 2018

USB14-0409. Amend. Self-study categories of accredited MCLE defined.  Proposed changes to the rule allow up to nine (9) hours of self-study CLE credit during a compliance period for lawyers who lecture on legal topics in community outreach programs.

USB14-0413. Amend. MCLE credit for qualified audio and visual presentations, webcasts, computer interactive telephonic programs, writing, lecturing’ teaching, live attendance.  Proposed changes to the rule state the hours and types of credit that are allowed for lawyers who lecture on legal topics in community outreach programs.

Rules Governing the State Bar – Effective May 1, 2018

USB14-0701 Amend. Changes to Rule 14-701 clear up confusion regarding the definition of “bar examination” and make the definition of practice of law consistent with the definition used in 14-802.

USB14-0704 Amend. Change makes the rule consistent with proposed rule 14-809.

USB14-0705 Amend. Change makes the rule consistent with proposed rule 14-809.

USB14-0713 Amend. Change makes the rule consistent with proposed rule 14-809.

USB14-0719 Amend. Change makes the rule consistent with proposed rule 14-809.

USB14-0806 Amend. Change makes the rule consistent with proposed rule 14-809.

USB14-0807 Amend. Changes to Rule 14-807 clarify language that has been a source of confusion for students seeking to practice under the rule.

USB14-0809 New. This new rule will allow lawyers admitted in other jurisdictions, who have submitted an application for admission to the Utah State Bar, to practice law in Utah under supervision while awaiting admission

USB14-0904 Amend. Changes to the rule clarify that any lawyer on whose behalf the Fund for Client Protection makes a payment can be administratively suspended for failure to reimburse the Fund.
