Judge Kent R. Holmberg was appointed to the Third District Court by Governor Gary R. Herbert in December 2016. He serves Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele Counties. Judge Holmberg graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, and cum laude with a juris doctorate from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. Judge Holmberg worked as an internal auditor for the Internal Revenue Service during undergraduate school and as a law clerk at Honeywell, Inc. in Minneapolis during law school. He is a former certified public accountant. For the two decades prior to relocating from Minnesota to Utah in 2005, Judge Holmberg was a private practice attorney representing business, government, and individuals and was a professor at Minnesota State Colleges teaching constitutional law, evidence law, Indian law, and trial practice. Previous to his appointment to the bench, he served as an Assistant Attorney General and Torts Section Director in the Utah Attorney General’s Office and at Petersen and Associates as a trial lawyer in Utah and Idaho. Judge Holmberg is a current committee member of the Utah Supreme Court Advisory Committee on the Utah Rules of Civil Procedure and the Utah Indian Child Welfare Committee. 10/17
