Judge David L. Johnson was appointed to the Third District Juvenile Court in February 2022 by Governor Spencer Cox. He serves Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties. Judge Johnson received a juris doctorate from the McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific in 2006. He graduated from California State University, Fresno in 1996 with a degree in journalism. Judge Johnson represented children in Utah’s juvenile courts for more than 14 years, first as a guardian-ad-litem and then as a delinquency defense attorney. In 2017, he earned the Excellence in Juvenile Representation award from Utah Juvenile Defender Attorneys. Prior to his appointment, he served as an Assistant Attorney General and general counsel for Utah’s Department of Human Services. Judge Johnson has presented nationally regarding juvenile human trafficking issues and has served on multiple local and statewide boards to address trafficking and juvenile homelessness.
