Scope of Self-Help

Learn about who you are and are not able to represent.

The courts provide the information and forms on these web pages free of charge to any member of the public. Once completed, the forms are suitable for filing. There is often a fee for filing pleadings and other papers, but there is not an additional fee for filing these "fill-in-the-blank" forms. There is an additional fee for filing a document prepared with the Online Court Assistance Program (OCAP).

Buyer beware! (Caveat emptor!) Some websites offer forms that might be legally sufficient in the Utah courts, but they might be rejected by the judge. And you may have to pay a fee for the forms. Before using forms from another website, check this website to see whether a free, court-approved form is available. If not, you might want to consider hiring a Utah lawyer (utahbar.org) to prepare documents for you rather than paying for a form that might be rejected.

The courts are working to expand the information and forms available, but we do not have information and forms on every topic.

Online Court Assistance Program

The Utah Online Court Assistance Program (OCAP) is the official State of Utah website for assistance in preparing court documents if you are not able to have an attorney draft them for you. Documents can be prepared for divorce, landlord tenant, guardianship of a minor, protective orders, as well as other select cases.

Legal Clinics

Legal clinics give general legal information and brief legal advice. You can also get help with forms, and ask questions about the law. Most legal clinics handle civil law matters only.
