Members of the roster must also re-qualify annually by:
- Conducting at least six mediaitons (or 24 hours)
- Mediating three pro bono cases
- Completing at least six hours of continuing education in alternative dispute resolution
Mediator and Arbitrator Qualifications
Mediators
Mediators on the court roster have completed a minimum of 30 hours of basic mediation training; and if they are providing mediation in the domestic area, they have completed an additional 24 hours of divorce/domestic training. All mediators have at least 10 hours of experience and have passed an exam on the ADR Ethical Code.
Master Mediator Status
The distinction of master mediator is given to those ADR Providers who have submitted documentation that they have completed over 300 hours in conducting mediation sessions.
Arbitrators
Arbitrators on the list must be a member in good standing of the Utah State Bar for at least ten years.
Both mediators and arbitrators are held to an ethical code and may not be on the roster if they have misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude, any felony conviction, or any sanction from a professional organization.
Mediation Costs
Mediation fees are set by the individual mediator and generally range from $30.00 - $300.00 per hour. Fees are usually based on experience & background. Mediations typically run several hours but may be more or less depending on the issues involved. The fees are usually split among the parties unless ordered or arranged otherwise.
For example: If a mediator hired at $100.00 an hour conducts a four hour mediation, the charge will be $400.00 for the mediation session. If there are 2 parties involved, each party will owe $200.00 (half the total mediation cost) to the mediator.
If your court fees have been waived and you are referred to mediation, you may request a pro bono mediator. Please include your case number and contact information.
If your court fees have not been waived and you feel you need financial assistance, Utah Dispute Resolution (utahdisputeresolution.org) provides mediation services on a sliding fee scale. You can also check the court roster for mediators with low hourly fees.
