Salt Lake City, Utah—Applications are now being accepted for a vacancy on the Utah Court of Appeals bench. The position will replace Judge Judith Billings who is retiring effective Dec. 31, 2008.
To be considered for the position, candidates must be at least 30 years of age, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Utah for at least five years, and admitted to practice law in Utah.
Information on benefits, judicial retention, and performance evaluation is posted on the Utah State Courts’ Web site at www.utcourts.gov under employment opportunities. Application packets are available by contacting Margo Bird at (801) 578-3800 or through e-mail at margob@email.utcourts.gov.

UTAH STATE COURTS EDUCATION DIRECTOR APPOINTED
Salt Lake City, UT—Mary Aguirre-Shahin, Esq., has been appointed as the new director of the Utah Judicial Institute, which is the education arm of the Utah State Courts. Shahin replaces Diane Cowdrey who accepted a position with the Administrative Office of the Courts in California. In her position with the Utah State Courts, Shahin will oversee the development of judicial education programs for judges and court staff throughout the state.
Prior to joining the Utah State Courts, Shahin worked in Afghanistan as a legal advisor for a U.S. State Department judicial reform project. In that capacity she trained prosecutors and police officers and conducted the first ever comprehensive assessment of the judiciary in northern Afghanistan. Before this, she worked closely with the Ministry of Justice in Jordan on a USAID judicial reform project. In 2004, Shahin served as general counsel to the Supreme Court of Micronesia where she developed training programs for Pacific Island judges. She has also worked for the American Bar Association where she assisted with the first ever Judicial Education Conference for more than 400 judges in the kingdom of Jordan.
Shahin began her work in judicial education in 1998 at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada, where she developed award-winning judicial education programs. Her innovative “Courage to Live Judicial Outreach Education Program,” received national awards and acclaim and serves as a model judicial outreach program throughout the country.
Shahin is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and an honor law graduate of Hastings Law School in San Francisco, California. Prior to her judicial education career, Shahin worked as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. where she was awarded the Attorney General’s Special Achievement Award. She has practiced environmental law with California law firms whose clients included Fortune 500 companies.

DIVORCE EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN MAY CLASSES SCHEDULED
Salt Lake City, UT—The Third District Court has scheduled Divorce Education for Children Classes on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to noon and Monday, May 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Divorce Education for Children class is available for children 9 to 12 years old whose parents have filed for divorce. The class is presented twice each month—one Monday evening and one Saturday—at the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse at 450 South State Street. To register for the class, parents should call Alyssa White at (801) 578-3897 or e-mail alyssaw@email.utcourts.gov. There is no charge to attend the classes.
The program’s curriculum provides children with skills they can use at home, such as how to express their feelings to parents. Mental health professionals teach the class with the assistance of state court judges and commissioners. Participation in the children’s class is voluntary.

SECOND DISTRICT COURT JUDGE TO PRESIDE AT MOCK TRIAL
Students to Determine the Fate of the Big Bad Wolf
WHAT: Utah State Court judges are encouraged to take an active part in the community to increase public understanding and promote public confidence in the judiciary. As part of this effort, Second District Court Judge Thomas Kay will be conducting a mock trial with third grade students from Farmington’s Eagle Bay Elementary.
The trial will focus on the Big Bad Wolf vs. The Three Little Pigs.
The students will play the part of prosecuting and defense attorneys, witnesses, victims, defendant, jurors, and courtroom personnel.
WHEN:
Monday, April 28, 2008 beginning at 9:30 a.m.; followed by a tour of the courthouse.

The Administrative Office of the Courts and the Utah State Bar are hosting a reception to recognize Chief Justice Christine M. Durham’s receipt of the William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence. The 2007 William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence was presented to Chief Justice Durham on Nov. 15 in Washington, D.C. by Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts. One of the most prestigious judicial honors in the country, the Rehnquist Award is presented annually to a state court judge who exemplifies the highest level of judicial excellence, integrity, fairness, and professional ethics.
