There has been an event with one of the jurors in the case of State of Utah v. Warren Steed Jeffs. The juror is being replaced with an alternate. Court will reconvene shortly.
8:10 p.m. (MST) Sept. 24, 2007
In the case of State of Utah v. Warren Steed Jeffs. At 8:10 p.m. (MST), Judge James Shumate called the jury back into the courtroom. The jury indicated they were close to a verdict, but wanted to sleep on it overnight. The judge released them for the evening. The jury will be back in session on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m.
Following are answers to questions some of you have had. Also, I'm testing the e-mail list to make sure everyone who is covering the trial is on my distribution list.
Thanks,
nancy v.
Friday, September 21 at 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
-Prosecution will begin with closing arguments followed by the defense. Prosecution will have the final word since they have the burden of proof in the case.
-Judge to review jury instructions. (Jury instructions will be made public after this.)
-Jury begins deliberation. (If necessary, the jury will continue deliberations on Monday, Sept. 24.)
-Credentialed media will receive an e-mail from me once the jurors are done deliberating. There will be at least one hour for reporters to return to the courthouse.
-Evidence from the case will be made available on the court's website after the verdict is rendered.
-Once the verdict is in, jurors will be asked if they are interested in talking with the media. If any jurors are willing to do so, the court will facilitate this in the courthouse, however, cameras will not be allowed at this point.
-If convicted, each charge holds a sentence of five to life.
-Sentencing must be scheduled no sooner than two days after a conviction; but no more than 45 days, which can be waived.

-A reminder that CNN will provide the video feed at its truck via a video/audio mult box during the breaks.
-No live transmissions of audio or video will be allowed from the court room. So if you have been approved to use a lap top in the courtroom, you can not transmit any audio or video of the proceedings live.
-The Utah State Court has set-up a website to post notices in this case. Here is a link to the site: http://www.utcourts.gov/media/hpcases/
There isn't a lot of information on the site currently, but as time goes on more will be posted on the site.
Thanks,
nancy v.
-Laptops in the courtroom: If you are interested in using a computer laptop in the courtroom, please send me an e-mail with your request for the judge to consider.
-Breaks: There will be three breaks during the day: mid-morning, lunch, and mid-afternoon. During these breaks the tapes from the hearing will be taken to the CNN truck for distribution.
-Satellite trucks: Satellite trucks will not be allowed in the court parking lot until after 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20. This is to allow court patrons access to the parking lot for Monday's court business.
