New Year, New Laws

  • HB75: Property Taxation of Low-Income Housing.
  • SB116: Armed Forces Property Tax Exemption.
  • SB122: Urban Farming Assessment Act.
  • SB263: Education Requirements for Nursing Licensure Amendments.

December Holiday Hours

fireworks1.jpgThe Utah State Law Library, and all Utah State Courts, will be closed on Tuesday, December 25th, and Tuesday, January 1st, for the Christmas and New Years Day holidays. Regular business hours (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) will resume the following day.

We will be open regular business hours on both Christmas Eve, December 24th, and New Years' Eve, December 31st.

New Utah Judge Confirmed

ct mtns.jpgThe Utah State Senate voted on Wednesday, December 19th, 2012 to confirm F. Richards Smith as a juvenile court judge in the Fourth District Court. He was confirmed during the 10th Extraordinary Session of the Utah Senate. The audio transcript of the session is available.

U.S. Supreme Court case involving Utah company

dnastructure.jpgThe U.S. Supreme Court often reviews high-profile cases. This term, one of these cases involves Myriad Genetics, a company based in Salt Lake City. The case is Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc., and the Supreme Court granted certiorari to the issue of whether human genes are patentable.

If you would like to research this case, you can read the filings in this case on SCOTUSblog, a comprehensive blog with news and information about U. S. Supreme court cases. Also, you can find several articles related to the science behind the dispute using PubMedCentral, a full-text archive of scientific literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine.

New Supreme Court Briefs

The library has received 48 Supreme Court briefs. The docket numbers range from 20100011 to 20101017 (list not inclusive).

If you're looking for a specific brief, contact the library by phone (801-238-7990) or email to make sure we have it. If you can't come in to make copies yourself, we offer a document delivery service. We will scan the briefs and email them to you. The cost for this service is $5.00 for the first ten pages and additional $.50 for each subsequent page.

Utah Redistricting Documents Online

redistricting.jpgWe have blogged in the past about Utah's redistricting process that occurred last year. The legislation related to redistricting passed during the 2011 Third Special Session of the Utah Legislature.

This year, the legislature made all legislative documents and correspondence related to the redistricting effort online on the Redistrict Utah website. The files total about 16,000 pages of records. They are divided into 15 separate files, and are further divided into smaller PDF files for easier downloading and/or browsing.

Law Library Holiday Tree

Holiday Tree.jpgIf you visit the law library this month you'll see our holiday tree, located right behind our reference desk. The tree is composed of items from all parts of our print collection, including Utah materials, government documents, appellate briefs, reporters, and treatises.

The law library is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and is located on the first floor of the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse, 450 S. State Street, in Salt Lake City.
