Utah Laws Effective January 1, 2009

A number of laws passed during the 2008 General Legislative Session and the 2007 First Special Session become effective in Utah on January 1, 2009, or at least make mention of a January 1, 2009 date.

Bankruptcy Law Network

The Bankruptcy Law Network is a great online resource if you have questions about bankruptcy and want information from a reputable source. The web site content is created and vetted by bankruptcy attorneys and consumer advocates from across the United States and the authors write about topics like filing for Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcy, when to consult a bankruptcy attorney, and specific types of debt bankruptcy does or does not erase.

If you are interested in reviewing more material about bankruptcy, the Law Library has a selection of Nolo books, written in plain language, that you are welcome to read in the library. The Nolo titles include Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, How to File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, and The New Bankruptcy: Will it Work for You?.

Searching for Utah Cases

Use the Utah State Courts' web site to locate both Court of Appeals and Supreme Court opinions. Court of Appeals opinions are available from 1997 to present and Supreme Court opinions are available from September of 1996. Use the search box to do a keyword search, or browse opinions by name or by year of opinion.

LexisONE also offers a free service that allows you to search 10 years worth of Utah cases, either by keyword or citation. You can also narrow your results by date, judge, parties, and counsel.

2008 Comparison of Legislative Resources by Government and Non-Government Web Sites

GPO Access has released a report comparing the availability of legislative resources on eight online databases, four governmental and four non-governmental. The governmental databases include GPO Access, THOMAS, and, while the non-governmental databases include, HeinOnline, LexisNexis Congressional, and Westlaw.

The New Bankruptcy: Will It Work For You?

This Nolo publication is useful for anyone interested in the bankruptcy laws that were passed in 2005. The author discusses how the new bankruptcy laws affect someone's eligibility to file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy and provides a number of sample forms and worksheets. This book can help you determine what assets you can keep even after you have filed for bankruptcy, and the steps and costs involved.

This title and a variety of other Nolo books are located on the front counter of the library.

Black Americans in Congress, 1870-2007

One of our most recent federal document acquisitions is titled Black Americans in Congress, 1870-2007. This book, published by the U.S. House of Representatives, presents biographies on all African-Americans who have served and currently serve in the U.S. Congress. Feel free to browse this book at the law library, or access a full text version available through the U.S. Government Printing Office.

For those who may be more interested in this historic topic, The U.S. Capitol's Office of the Clerk has even created a website for the book with extra features, including lesson plans for teachers.
