Law Clerks at the Utah Appellate Courts
Clerkships at the Utah Supreme Court and the Utah Court of Appeals are full-time positions generally for at least one year. The appellate judges hire their own clerks. Please see the information provided below for the details on applying for a clerkship in each chamber. Applicants must have completed at least 4 semesters of law school prior to submitting application materials. The current salary for law clerks is:

Judge James Z. Davis
No set law clerk rotation.
Application requirements: resume, law school transcript, writing sample, 2-3 letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters may be sent separately.
Judge Carolyn B. McHugh
1 clerkship available in August each year; 1 clerkship available in January each year. Clerkship positions are filled through the August 2012 start date. With respect to the January 2013 position, Judge McHugh is considering the possibility of hiring career law clerk. The position available in August of each year will remain a one-year clerkship. Applicants should indicate whether their interest is in a one-year position or in a position that may become an extended clerkship, if both parties are satisfied with the arrangement at the end of one year. Excellent analytical and writhing skills are required.

Unpaid internships are available during the school year, but not during the summer.
Judge Gregory K. Orme
1 clerkship ordinarily available beginning August each year; 1 clerkship ordinarily available beginning January each year.
Application requirements: resume, law school transcript, unedited writing sample, and three letters of recommendation.
Applications from third-year students are accepted between August 1 and August 31 for the two positions to be filled following their graduation. Law school graduates may apply during the same period. Due to the volume of applications received, applications received before August 1 or after August 31 will not be considered. Interviews will be conducted in September. Offers will be extended in October.
Judge William A. Thorne, Jr.
No set law clerk rotation. Law clerks are hired when an incumbent law clerk gives notice of leaving.

Judge J. Frederic Voros, Jr.
1 clerkship available in August each year; 1 clerkship available in January each year.

Judge Stephen L. Roth
