Principles of the Work Program
The Work Program provides youth an opportunity to complete court-ordered community service hours and restitution (money owed to victims due to injury or loss). The youth do not receive money, but are given credit for hours worked. Money from the victim restitution fund is paid directly to the youths' victims. The victim restitution fund receives money through a percentage of fines collected.
The Work Program in Salt Lake County maintains contracts with West Valley City, Taylorsville City and Jordan School District. These agencies provide work opportunities for the youth such as litter removal and graffiti removal. The youth crews also perform work for other non-profit community agencies such as the Globus Relief, Lifecare and the Food Bank. They also assist with community projects and cultural events.
The Work Program is a successful example of community partnerships. The agencies and the community as a whole benefit from the projects performed by the youth crews. In turn, the community is providing the youth an opportunity to be accountable for the harm they have done toward their community and their victims.
