Truancy Court

The Truancy Court program is an intensive front end, short term intervention that helps juveniles attend and succeed in school. It is the mission of the Truancy Court to enforce compliance with Utah's compulsory education laws while balancing the diverse needs of students, parents and educators. The primary goal of the Truancy Court program is to foster the development of an appropriate and personalized educational plan in which each student can succeed. The plan is created by collaboration between educational professionals, the student, Court staff and the student's parents or guardian. The Court's goal is also to recognize and award those students who make sound choices and achievements and to administer consequences when students make poor choices. The Court imposes structure and accountability upon the student so that habits for success can be learned with the ultimate goal being successful termination of court jurisdiction. Truancy Court is conducted in the Juvenile Court Commissioner courtroom and averages 300 students per school year.
